Boyd Will Represent WCEC in Washington
Savannah Boyd, age 16, and a junior at Hawkins High School, has taken first place in Wood County Electric Cooperative’s essay contest. As the contest winner, she will represent WCEC at the Government in Action Youth Tour in Washington, D. C., June 7-15, 2007.
Boyd was chosen by an independent panel of judges, based on her essay submission, which outlined her future goals. Her selection comes as a natural fit, because her grandfather worked his entire career at an electric cooperative in San Augustine, which enhanced Boyd’s appreciation of the service co-ops provide.
Boyd is the daughter of Kathy and Jason Boyd, of Hawkins. She participates in Cross Country, is a member of the Lady Hawk Basketball Team, she is involved in the One Act Play Drama Club, a member of the Student Council, Key Club and TSA. She was elected president of her junior class, and is involved in the youth group at Summit Heights Fellowship. She is employed as a sports photographer for the Big Sandy-Hawkins Journal, where she covers high school sports. She also owns her own freelance photography business, Shotz, and takes family portraits, senior portraits and wedding photos.
After high school, Boyd would like to attend Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, where she plans to major in photography.
Of her achievement, Boyd’s mother, Kathy Boyd said, "She is an all-around great daughter, and her father and I are very pleased with her accomplishments."
Boyd will travel to Washington, D.C. with approximately 90 other Youth Tour winners from other Texas cooperatives. She will have the opportunity to meet congressional representatives, and visit historic memorials and cultural centers in our nations’ capitol.
WCEC CEO/General Manager Debbie Robinson said, “We are extremely proud of this program, and the youth we sponsor to represent our cooperative members. Over the years, we’ve seen the positive impact this program has made in developing leadership skills that students will demonstrate throughout their careers and in life.”
