Job Shadow Impacts Quitman Youth
On February 2, 2007, Wood County Electric Cooperative, along with The Greater Quitman Area Chamber of Commerce and The Quitman Rotary Club sponsored Job Shadow Day, which is a nationwide event. During this event Quitman high school students had the opportunity to “shadow” local businesses.
Groundhog Job Shadow Day is an academically motivating activity designed to give students an up-close look at the world of work and to answer the question, “Why do I have to learn this?” Job Shadowing can take many forms, but typically it encompasses a half-day visit by a student to a place of work. The student is given the opportunity to tour the site, “shadow” an employee for at least two hours and participate in workplace activities. Bill Travis, Vocational Director for the Quitman Rotary Club, along with Dana Hamrick, QISD Counselor and Job Shadow Coordinator, were instrumental in organizing this year’s event.
The Quitman Rotary Club provided lunch at Carroll Green Civic Center for students and their mentors.
According to Kacie Sherrard and Heather Harbour, two students who shadowed employees at WCEC, “Job Shadow Day was educational and beneficial experience.”
