Let’s Talk Turkey
Cade Hayley, a fourteen year old freshman at Winnsboro High School and an avid hunter, has just very recently taken up turkey calling. He received his first diaphragm in March, and since then has been working on perfecting his turkey calling techniques. Cade’s time has evidently been well spent as he brought home the title of Texas’ Jr. Calling Champion from the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). He was awarded his title at a competition held at Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine, TX on January 14, 2012. Cade competed against other participants from across the state and his win qualifies him for the Grand National Championship competition. In February of 2013 in Nashville, TN, the NWTF will host the Grand National Calling Championship where dozens of the best youth and adult turkey callers gather to compete by demonstratating their best yelps, cackles, and clucks of a wild turkey hen.
Cade picked up turkey calling so he could spend more time with his dad, Terry. Little did Terry know that Cade’s talent would surpass his own in a short amount of time. “Cade picked up his diaphragm and within five minutes he had three calls down and all I could do was watch in amazement,” said Terry. Cade has continued to perfect his technique by watching videos of past National Champions.
Along with the title, Cade was also awarded a first place plaque in the Hunter Division and two gift certificates to Bass Pro Shop.
Cade is the son of WCEC Journeyman Terry Hayley and Brandi Putman.
