WCEC Awards $17,000 to East Texas Students

WCEC has awarded $17,000 in "Power My World" scholarships to 12 deserving area students. These went to high school seniors in the co-op’s 9-county service area to provide financial assistance for their higher education endeavors. Out of nearly 50 applicants, ten local students were selected to each receive $1,500 towards college studies, and two students received $1,000 each for trade/vocational programs.

The funding for these scholarships comes from unclaimed capital credit payments that were returned to WCEC by the state, and it does not impact WCEC's operational budget.

The independent judging panel included WCEC members: Kelle Gressett, Marlene Ovard and Bill Martin. The judges reviewed each students’ essay, academic records, and their documented civic and community involvement to determine the winners.

Based on their exceptional work and achievements, the ten $1,500 recipients are: Mineola ISD’s Ana Escudero; Mt Vernon ISD’s Karen Castillo and Savanna Maxton; Quitman ISD’s Kennedi Elmore, Addison Marcee, Lila Park and Mattison Smith; Van ISD’s Aislynn Jarvis; Winnsboro ISD’s Karsyn Daniels and Brennen Griffin. The $1,000 VOTEC winners are: Jaxson Ritchey, Hawkins ISD, and Kaylie Wood, Quitman ISD.

Of those selected, WCEC CEO/General Manager Trey Teaff said “The quality of students in our community, their expressed goals, and their dedication to pursuing their dreams points to a bright future. We congratulate every applicant and look forward to seeing their successes.”
