Safe Operation & Inspections of Grid-Tied Solar Systems
- Grid-tied solar systems require inspection and approval by WCEC before operation.
- Failure to notify us before operating your system may lead to a meter tampering charge.
- Inspections are required whether you export excess kWH to WCEC or not.
- Improper connection and operation can cause damage to the grid and pose grave dangers to linemen.
- We will inspect to ensure a properly working UL 1741-compliant inverter. Requirements include:
- A visible, lockable, and accessible solar A/C disconnect switch.
- A label/notice indicating the presence of solar energy.
Safety Implications
- A connected solar unit operates the same as any other generator. It can back feed electricity onto power lines to cause a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation for linemen.
- Without the inverter there is an electrocution threat.
- The inverter stops power from being sent to a de-energized line.
After Inspection
- Once a unit passes inspection, it is marked on our internal system map.
- This helps ensure linemen are aware of it when they’re working on lines.
- They will make sure to check for back-feeding electrical current before beginning work.
